Name Games

Kinetic Name Game -- up to 30 students
  • Stand in a circle
  • Make a movement and say your name
  • Group repeats your name and movement three times
Kinetic Memory Name Game -- up to 15 students
  • Stand in a circle
  • Make a movement and say your name
  • Move around the circle
  • Each person makes their movement and says their name and then repeats the names and movements of all those who have gone before them
6 Word Story Name Game -- up to 30 students
  • Tell a 6 word story of the origin of your name
  • Hemingway once wrote a story in just six words: "For sale: baby shoes, never worn."
  • Use this model to come up with a way to introduce yourself by telling the story of where your name came from.

Stokes

Sound Ball
  • Stand in a circle
  • Each person thinks of a sound and makes eye contact with someone in the circle
  • Then they “pass” the sound ball by making the sounds and motioning to the person who they made eye contact with
  • The next person needs to accept the sound by “catching it” and repeating the sound
  • The new person with the sound ball needs to think of a new sound and pass it to another person in the circle

Word Whip
  • Stand in a circle
  • Everyone says a word (no repeats)
  • Prompts:
    • Come up with words that rhyme with one word
    • Words that describe an experience or feeling
    • Favorite things

Long Lost Friend
  • I am going to give a series of prompts, and for each round you are going to find a new person to greet. I'll ring the gong in between prompts.
  • Prompts:
    • A long lost friend
    • Your 80 year old grandfather who is hard of hearing
    • A person who just told you that you won the lottery
    • A person who just told you that they smashed your car

Gift-Giving
  • Get into pairs
  • Using one post-it, create a gift for your partner -- not talking allowed
  • Give the gift to your partner
  • How did it feel to receive that gift?

Line Up
  • Have students line up on one side of the room
  • Pose questions to the group, where students would either stay on one side of the room, move to the middle, or cross over
  • Prompts:
    • Mountain or ocean
    • Coffee or tea
    • Sweet or savory
    • Introverted or extroverted
    • City or country
    • Rock or rap
    • Reading or math
    • Sports or Arts
    • Hot or cold
    • Have an adventure or stay at home

How Are You Doing Really?
  • Everyone gets a pad of post-its
  • Students should record their feelings and thoughts, one on each post-it
    • Think of things that are positive, things that are bothering you, things that are on your mind
  • Now, go around and chat with people
  • Use the post-it notes to spark deeper conversations with that person based on real things going on in their lives

Party, Park, Jail*
  • This team-building exercise is great for quickly establishing intimacy among a team. Students get into small groups and follow the prompts below, which take them from a party to a park after closing time to a being carted off to jail. As each scene progresses, change the space to change the mood: dim the lights, give students a little less personal space, etc. The conversations should give the students a chance to be vulnerable and get to know something personal about their teammates.
    • Party
      • Space: Standing up, mingling, party style. Lights up.
      • Situation: You’re at a party of a good friend and you are meeting new people.
      • Prompt: What is your favorite thing to do on the weekend?
    • Park
      • Space: Sitting. Lights a little low.
      • Situation: You and a few folks really enjoyed hanging out and now you are relaxing in the park around a fire.
      • Prompt: What are your favorite things about yourself? What are you most proud of?
    • Jail
      • Space: On the floor or standing uncomfortably close. Closed in space. Lights off.
      • Situation: The park was actually closed. You are now being arrested for trespassing. You’re in jail.
      • Prompt: How do you wish others would see you? What are they missing?
