The Compost Challenge :
intended audience : middle school and high school.
Time: Range from 3 hours to multiple days.
The Compost Challenge was made to be self-directed if desired. The materials are a "placemat" and "napkin" for each student. The placemat serves as a dashboard to students to update as the challenge progresses. The napkin gives some prompts and instructions in terms of how to proceed.
This activity includes interactive instructional videos for each of its eight steps. They can be accessed at vimeo.com. Just search for “zap” and “compost” since all the videos are tagged with these words. Alternatively, you can download a QR code reader (QuickMark works well) onto a camera phone. QR codes are the black and white “barcodes” that appear on each step of the napkin. By taking a picture of them using a QR code reader your phone will automatically take you to each video.
To fold the napkin to prepare for the challenge : Fold the napkin so that the "Fold 1st" squares match each other. Then fold so that the "Fold 2nd" squares match each other.
These materials are best printed on 11x17inch paper (they can be printed on letter-sized paper as well). The napkin is double-sided, and the stars (found on both sides of the napkin) should be lined up in preparing the copier for double-sided copying.
