    An Online Tool for Documentation, Sharing, and Articulation

    of Student Design Work


    d.portfolio is a pilot project of the K-12 Lab designed to help us understand the types of digital tools that might support student work in design thinking. We have observed a clear need for print-based tools that can scaffold or guide students and teacher through different stages of a design inquiry. What could we do with digital tools?


    The digital portfolio will enable individual learners and student teams to record and reflect on the work they do. Learners will benefit from being able to view their progress through the entire arc of a design project. Educators will be able to view student work, and search across a database of student work that extends beyond their school or classroom.




    d.portfolio is a central place where the artifacts of design-based inquiry can be collected and made the object of discussion. In addition, educators expressed a strong need to understand how students are making sense of the design process. d.portfolio will allow students to upload media and reflect on their experiences in real time, rather than at the completion of a design project. What details in photo provoke student insights? What were the takeaways from a brainstorm? How did a POV lead to an final prototype ? d.portfolio is a tool to make student reasoning visible.


    Student work will become part of an indexed database of design artifacts, useful as teaching tools, for ideation, and as a meta lens on how other students have tackled design projects in the past.


    While d.portfolio will be developed for specific users in the K-12 education space, it is hoped that this tool would be useful to other members of the d.school community. And could be adapted for use in the d.school's college-level classes.

    UPDATE: We received some amazing feedback from teachers at our 2009 Teacher Workshop and are ready to realize the first iteration of d.portfolio using Wordpress as a content management system. A functioning prototype is available offline.

    Feedback from 2009 Workshop participants:
    Loved the clean interface, the simplicity.
    -Basically it's a good way to load things up and share with others (finished proto)
    -Liked the blank forms / idea map
    -Liked graphics, clean, visual UI
    -Consistent, flexible, one view
    -Don't have to upload, can just comment
    -Teachers would like to track their own projects and look at others projects
    -Separate page per project
    -Would be nice to drag-n-drop files instead of uploading
    -Would like Skype-like feature so that experts can tap in when needed
    -Would like for students to be able to build new teams, recruit members for the project, have collaborations around the world, one class to join another class, to post ideas and look for partners, a way to weigh in, game?
    -For sharing and recruiting team members need to specify: grade level, project summary (in addition to the nutshell), age range, name, contact, idea / focus area, goal, question, palette or sticky figure to visually represent the project by kids, diagram / concept map
    -Each process step in different page / multiple screens / tile view
    -In addition to search, would like to have a break down by various categories such as subject, grade (K-3 or K-5), series
    -Should be able to borrow different pieces of others' work
    -Should be able to see what "worked" per given project and what didn't
    -Primarily will be used during class time and time may vary depending on stage in the process

    Questions:
    _Can students browse other project pages (and join teams with other student groups at other schools?)
    -How can it be used in the classroom?
    -Can teachers contribute?
    -How can students learn from each other using this?
