How might we gain human-centered insights from “big data”? How might we understand how insights from extreme users generalize across millions of people?

“Hybrid Insights” was developed at IDEO to apply human-centered techniques from the design thinking process to the world of data and design.

Students who take this class will learn to seamlessly merge qualitative stories with quantitative data to create human-centered insights that scale across large populations to inspire design and inform business strategy.

The class will begin with a design challenge that gets students to think about questions to ask of data in service of human-centered design. Students will then begin conducting interviews and ideation sessions, alternating between zooming in to understand people and business needs; and zooming out to understand how the human insights scale with data.

Note: This is not a statistics class – but a class on data storytelling and designing with data. All students must have some basic to advanced understanding of statistics/data (such as being able to use excel or spss).
