Caneel’s life is a dance between right brain and left brain. She spent the first half of her life as an actress and artist. After the dot com bust, she dove into more analytical approaches to business, creative strategy, and product innovation. Working with startups and product teams gives her the most irresistible blend of creative and insight-driven strategy.
Dr. Joyce founded Kickass Corp, a boutique consulting firm that helps startups and mission-driven innovators grow in smart, powerful and sustainable ways. Before focusing on consulting, Caneel was Director of Growth at a venture-backed consumer startup called Britely (acquired by Groupon). Along her journey she has worked with companies including Disney, Wells Fargo, Mozilla, Sunpower, Path, Tumblr, Nutmeg, Jump Associates and many early stage startups.
In Caneel’s earlier academic career she was a professor of Management at the London School of Economics and earned her PhD in organizational behavior at the Haas School of Business, UC Berkeley. She has published several papers in peer-reviewed journals on innovation, culture and design. She does quantitative, qualitative, and experimental research – her strength is combining qual & quant. Dr. Joyce’s research focuses on the psychological and social effects of constraint on creativity. (http://caneelian.com/research
Caneel is always looking for interesting collaborators, co-conspirators, and thought partners. These days she’s particularly interested in mobile app design, UX, and the Los Angeles / Silicon Beach startup ecosystem. Please get in touch with her if you think the two of you would have fun bouncing ideas around together.
